Will and Gem met our guide Hung at 8am for a bike tour through the area around Hoi An. Initially the main road with cars, buses and scooters was a challenge to say the least!! Turning off there is a labyrinth of small paths that felt much safer and that pass by the local houses through the tropical foliage.
Just as the heavens opened we headed in to visit a local lady who makes up small silk lanterns (80 per day for $4). With patience she and Hung helped us make our own lanterns but at our speed we could maybe make up 4 per day!!
Onwards to the river palm fields to the home of a local fisherman Mr Mang. First it was into the round bamboo boats that are surprisingly stable as Mr Mang showed us by rocking it regularly. With our short bamboo sticks we went crab fishing.... As hard as it sounds.
Some time was filled in with a few palm frond adornments made for Will.
Then it was back to shore to practise Vietnamese fishing net throwing.
How it SHOULD be done:
And practice makes perfect....
But at this rate we would starve!
Meanwhile Mrs Mang had prepared us a lovely lunch in their home but as usual TOO MUCH food!
Then it was back to the hotel after our cool adventure.
